The United Nations Security Council members on Monday expressed deep concern
over the grave situation in Yarmouk refugee camp in Syrian capital
Damascus,threatened by the IS militants.
"Members of the Security Council express deep concern regarding the grave
situation in Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria. The members condemned in the
strongest terms the grave crimes committed by IS and Al-Nusra against 18,000
civilians in the camp and emphasize the need that such crimes do not go
unpunished," Dina Kawar, Jordan's ambassador to UN and the chair of the
15-member UN Security Council, said in a press conference at the UN headquarters
in New York on Monday.
The Yarmouk refugee camp has seen ferocious shelling and battles, as the IS
and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front militants have taken over 90 percent of the
camp, a UK-based watchdog group said on Sunday.
Hundreds of Yarmouk camp residents have fled to nearby areas following the
extremists' attacks.
The Security Council chair called for humanitarian aid to protect the safety
of the civilians in the camp.
"The members call for the protection of civilians in the camp for ensuring
humanitarian access to the area including, by providing life-saving assistance
and ensure safe passage and evacuation of the civilians,”said Kawar.
